From I to Them 

Kids Company has worked with a number of private schools to generate greater understanding of vulnerable children’s needs and to bring this seemingly divided world closer to mutual understanding. This piece was created after a discussion between two sets of young people. Those from the private school describe the pressures they’re experiencing. They felt threatened and attacked by children in hoodies. The hoodie wearers in turn felt excluded and ashamed to make contact with the private school children. Both sides perceived each other as persecutory and resentful. To create this art piece a dialogue emerged whereby both sets of children shared their concerns and expressed the wish to bridge the divide. Each child was given their own circle within which to create their inner world, their personal enclosure, their private and sometimes lonely space. They were then given the opportunity to step beyond personal boundaries and explore potential meeting points. In between the circles are the social spaces. Look carefully. Each enclosure and every gap in between holds personal and mutual meaning.
